The Gerhard Toews collection was donated to the Mennonite Library and Archives in North Newton, Kansas. John B. Toews examined the material and was given permission to have Katherine Hooge transcribe the entire collection of family letters and the Gerhard Toews memoirs. Editing and translation was done by John B. Toews.

The monogram "Letters from Susan: A woman's view of the Russian Mennonite Experience. 1928-1941" was written by John B. Toews and published in 1987. It is the only material in the collection which has been translated and published to date.

The memoir was edited and translated by John B Toews. It focuses on the the revolution of 1917- 1918 and the atrocities of anarchist bandit Nestor Makhno in the village of Ohrloff and the Blumenort massacre.
The collection of family correspondence is found in "Letters" Fonds 112 Series 2, File 1, folders 1-10.
