Taken at a farewell party. During the 1920s many families emigrated from Russia, going mostly to Canada. Relatives, friends, and play-mates had to part. They did not know whether they would ever see each other again. The young people often organized a farewell event. It was a bitter-sweet experience. [HR 215]

Gerhard Sawatzky

The Gerhard Sawatzky family. Gerhard is a half-brother to Heinrich Heinrich Sawatzky, 1873, minister in Siberia. L-R: Katharina, Gerhard Sawatzky, Geroge Sawatzky ( father to Lynn Sawatzky) Katharina (nee Doerksen) Sawatzky, Jack, and Ann. The family is sitting in front of a barn door. Gerhard is wearing a dark suit (uniform) with pockets on the chest, buttoned to the top. The mother and girls are wearing dark dresses. George is also wearing a dark outfit and Jack a dress with a white bib.

This is a very small photograph of a group of people standing outside of boxcars on a railway. They are presumably on their way out of Russia in 1924. On the boxcar you can see the Russian USSR and hammer and sickle symbol. This photograph is similar to Item 100 and may contain some of the same people. The people are plainly dressed, the women's dresses are long.
