Colleagues Nikolai Peter and Abram Dick in Alternative Service.

This photograph shows left to right, Nikolai Peters and Abram Dick, possibly in alternative medical service in Rusisa. They are posed by a bare tree, wearing their uniforms, including winter coats. The German note on the back of the photograph is: "Sending you a pair of soldier lads, whom you will know, at least one of them. The other is Peters. You can imagine how we dress here. It may not be very impressive, but that's how we look. Am having a birthday today, will be eating "Kalwie" which I have brought." This picture also appears on page 45 of Mennonite Alternatove Service in Russia, and in Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos.

This is a photo of Jacob Funk in army medic attire with a group of people in front of a Russian field hospital kitchen of which he was manager. He is #6 in the photo and about 21 years old at the time.

J. D. Fast in the Alternative Medical Service in Russia

This is a portrait of J. D. Fast in uniform, a Mennonite Alternative Service worker in the Red Cross train in the medical corps in Russia in World War I. This photograph can also be found in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia, p. 111. There is a short note written in Russian on the reverse side of the photograph - "To Abram Jakob Dyck to remember our times on Train No. 208. J.D. Fast, Feb. 22. 1917."

Peter Cornies in the Alternative Medical Service in Russia

This is a full-lenth portrait of Peter Cornies wearing the uniform of the Red Cross Alternative Service in World War I in Russia. He has his right hand resting on a small, decorated stand with a small bouquet of flowers. The backdrop appears to be a canvas painting. The floor is covered with a cloth. "June 15, 1915, in remembrance", is written on the reverse. This photograph can also be found in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia, p. 114.

Jacob Dueck in the Alternative Service in Russia

This portrait of Jacob Dueck shows Jacob Dueck in the uniform of the Red Cross Alternative Service men in Russia in World War I. He is holding on to an ornamental chair to his left and has a rolled up paper in his right hand. On the cloth backdrop behind him one sees a dark scene of drapes and steps. There is a note on the reverse written in Russian: In memory to my dear friend, P.I. Cornies, Tiflis, May 1, 1915. This photograph also appears in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick on page 118.

Mennonite Hospital Corps, Wirballen (Winter, 1915)

This is a photo published in the Mennonitische Rundschau. It is a copy of a photo taken in 1915 of a group of Russian Mennonite medical corps conscripts posing beside their hospital train. They are in Wirballen in German captivity. The sentences below the picture say," This picture was kindly sent to us by Pastor Firtz Foth, Kaiserslautern, Germany, whose letter appeared on page 7 in the last edition of the "M.R." Who can send us the names of the Mennonite medics on this picture and briefly describe the group's experiences? Editor." Someone has used colored pen to identify two of the men: 2nd from left first row is a Jakob Kroeker, Neukirch, and 3rd from right - the tallest man on the picture - Willms from Tiege.

Barracks at the Azov Forestry camp

This photo is of four young men dressed in alternative service uniforms standing outside a large brick "U" shaped building posing for a photo. Other people can be seen in the background on the porch of the building. A street runs in front of the building in the foreground. There are two [flag poles?] on the yard which is surrounded by a fence.
