William Hespeler fonds

This fonds contains documents pertaining to the life of William Hespeler, such as confirmation of attending the Polytechnic Institute in Karlsruhe (1847-1849), of deferment from military service in 1850, of immigration to Canada, and of naturalization as a British subject. The fonds includes the items taken to Russia in 1872 (i.e. responses from Ottawa to the Russian Mennonite inquiries about priveledges been sought such as exemption from military service). The fonds also contains various items with the autographs of individuals such as Otto von Bismark, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia, and the British monarch, Queen Victoria. The documents pertain to Hespeler's service to Canada or Germany.

Delegates to the East Reserve

This photo is of the Mennonite delegates from Russia preparing to depart from the Federal Dominion Lands Office in Winnipeg to inspect the East Reserve. Government officials and even some Native people are present in the photo (note: this is only a copy of the original).

Vietnamese Refugees

This photo show the extended family of Vietnamese refugees that were received by Home Street Mennontie Church. Home Street members (l-r): Michael Thiessen, Henry Thiessen, Jackie Thiessen, Tina Letkemann, John R. Friesen, Olga Teichroeb and Abe Teichroeb. The Vietnamese family consisted of Tan Mau Ngo and his wife Bao Chanh Ngo with their 3 children My Quyen, Kieu Quyen and Tuan Hung; plus four siblings of the wife Bao Chank, Tich Chanh, My Chanh, Thoi Trung and Thoi Phuong Cung.

Familes traveling by freight train cars out of Russia

This is a copy of a photo showing families boarding a freight train car in preparation to leave Russia in the 1920s. About four families lived in one of these small freight cars for about two weeks en route to Riga, providing their own food along the way. Photograph in Gerhard Lohrenz, HERITAGE REMEMBERED: A Pictorial Survey of Mennonites in Prussia and Russia, revised and enlarged (Canadian Mennonite Bible College, 1977), 264.

Russian Relief and Paraguayan Immigration: Kratz, Maxwell H.

Maxwell H. Kratz was one of three men elected to the first Mennonite Central Committee on 27 September 1920. He was active in the leadership of MCC during its first projects of Russian relief, the purchase of land in Paraguay, and its incorporation. IX-02 includes Maxwell H. Kratz's MCC correspondence 1921-1934 related to 62 Russian refugees immigrating to the U.S. from Constantinople (present Istanbul, Turkey) and refugee immigration to Paraguay.
