Steinbach residents around 1897

This photograph shows a group of 21 adults, men and women, with 10 children including babies, posed in front of the Heinrrich Wiebe residence in Steinbach. The building has shingled siding, with tapestry hung onto the wall for a background. Persons identified by Mrs. George Goossen, Steinbach and from book, Reflections on our heritage, a history of Steinbach and R.M. of Hanover from 1874 by Abe Warkentin, 1971, page 88, as follows: Row 1: lying down, at right, Johann Wiebe; Row 2: 2nd from right, bearded man seated with tall hat, Johann T. Barkman (1862-1900); Row 3: l-r-Mrs. Heinrich Wiebe, holding baby; third from left, lady with white ribbon on dress, Mrs Klaas R. Toews(?); 5th from left, Mrs. Peter H. Guenther, born 1873, with infant son, Peter S. Guenther (later Steinbach teacher); Row 4: 2nd from left, Heinrich Wiebe; 4th from left, Abram Friesen; 6th from left Helena Reimer, daughter of local merchant Klaas Reimer; extreme right, German immigrant couple living in Steinbach at that time.

Peter S. Rempel (1855) family

Peter S. Rempel b. 18 Jan 1855 is seated on a chair with an arm resting on a small table. Olga (nee Wall) b. 1859 is sitting on a lower padded chair and their 2 sons are standing between them. Peter age 10 stands at his father's left, and John, age 6, at his mother's right. It is said that they met and married in Ontario in 1874 on their way to Manitoba. They settled near Grunthal where these two boys were born. Another boy, George, was born around 1900. He died of the flu during the epidemic of 1918. These pioneers made quite a contribution to the growth of the province at a time when things were not easy. There were three older girls; Mrs. Conrnelius Falk (Anna), Mrs. Peter F. Martens (Margaret), and Mrs. Ben B. Bergen Elizabeth).

Heinrich Plenert b. Jan 1, 1838, Kronsgarten d. 8 Nov 1910 Wiesenfeld, and wife Helena Jacob Hildebrand b. 28 Dec. 1842 Insel Chortitza d. 16 Feb. 1878 Wiesenfeld. They were married 25 Sep 1862. This photo is taken in a studio. The couple are sitting on chairs. Heinrich has his arm on a small table . Helena is wearing a long, dark dress with 4 layers of pleats at the hem. Heinrich is wearing suit, top button closed, the others open., white shirt and bow tie. Heinrich is the son of Heinrich Plenert 1809-1867 and wife Aganetha Bartel (von Moevsen) 1810-1901.( Children of Heinrich and Aganetha were: Anna, Heinrich b.1838, Aganetha and Eva).
