David Letkemann and other personnel of #190 Red Cross train

This is a photo of the staff of the train No.190. About 13,000 Mennonite men had to serve during the First World War. They served in various places and in different capacities. The most popular of all these services was probably that of a Red Cross worker. A great number of hospitals on wheels, that is Red Cross trains, were organized and thousands of our men served on them. To the left, right under the zero, sits David Letkemann. [HR 236]

This is a photo of three Mennonite Red Cross soldiers and two Russian nurses standing in front of a Red Cross train. Two wounded men can be seen in the door of the coach. [HR 243]

Personnel of a German-Russian combined Red Cross unit

This is a photo of a Red Cross unit, including some Mennonites in German uniforms, being presented to the Czarina. During the Russo-Japanese war, 1904-5, Germany sent a Red Cross Unit to the Russian front. It was a token of friendship. Mennonite young men, who had volunteered to serve in Russian Red Cross units because of their knowledge of the two languages, were delegated to serve in the German unit. The man sitting in front of the official is Peter Dyck. [HR 234]
