Mennonites in Red Army

This is a photo of young men serving in the Red Army who because of their refusal to take the gun were employed for various physical work. Seated (left to right): A. Neufeld, J. Wiens, de Jager, Wittenberg. Standing: A. Fast, J. Rempel, J. Klassen. Later on such refusal became unthinkable. [HR 73]

David Letkemann and other personnel of #190 Red Cross train

This is a photo of the staff of the train No.190. About 13,000 Mennonite men had to serve during the First World War. They served in various places and in different capacities. The most popular of all these services was probably that of a Red Cross worker. A great number of hospitals on wheels, that is Red Cross trains, were organized and thousands of our men served on them. To the left, right under the zero, sits David Letkemann. [HR 236]

This is a photo of the personnel of a Red Cross train. Most of the men are Mennonites. The woman in the second row from the back, to the right of the man with a high cap, is the daughter of Count Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer. [HR 237]
An original photo has labeled as Copy 2 (Acc. No. 2012-005). This medical unit (Sanitaetsdienst) was identified as No. 187. David Wiebe (1885-1937) is identified on the photo. Peter Ewert (1897-1963) is identified as the writer of the Russian text on the reverse side.
