Personal papers created by Lydia Oyer, an early leader in Mennonite nursing education. The collection consists primarily of diaries Oyer kept throughout her years as a nurse practitioner, with very brief records on patients, personal activities, and the weather. The scrapbook contains photos, news clippings, and notes from friends, classmates, and teachers from her time at the Mennonite Hospital School of Nursing in La Junta, Colorado. Other writings include essays on religious topics and a poem.

A small set of collected materials pertaining to Daniel Brenneman and his forebears.  Includes clippings, family histories, fragmentary correspondence, scattered records from Brenneman Memorial United Missionary Church, and miscellaneous material.  Researchers should be aware that there are very few original documents in this collection.  Most 19th and early 20th century documents are photocopies.

These records document the research process and findings of a survey on Mennonite congregational building projects undertaken between 1919 and 1949 Church Building Study (Project #9). Both new construction and renovations are documented, Records include meeting minutes pertaining to the project's administration, returned questionnaires filed by state, tabulations of results, the manuscript copy of the final report (which was also published in the Gospel Herald), and a small number of photographs of church buildings.

John Thut Photographs

The richest materials among these photographs are the140 color slides depicing Thut's volunteer work in England with German prisoners of war after World War II and his subsequent travel in the Western United States to Civilian Public Service (CPS) camps. These labeled and well-composed slides include images of Thut's living and working conditions in England, art work made by German POWs, and scenes of CPS work in Montana, South Dakota, and California. Also of note is a slide of Peter and Elfrieda Dyck's wedding gifts.

Other materials among Thut's photographs include a number of poorly-labeled black and white photographic prints of Goshen College in the early 1920s. Notable scenes include a May Day celebration and the construction of the college gymnasium. Also included is his passport obtained in 1944.

Jenifer Hiett Umble Correspondence and Photographs

These papers document  the experiences of Jenifer (Jeni) Hiett Umble and her husband, Art Umble, as Mennonite volunteer teachers in China in the late 1980s.  The Umbles worked under the auspices of the Mennonite Mission Board for the China Cultural Exchange.  They taught at the Sichuan Institute of Technology, located 15 kilometers outside of Chengdu, Sichuan, in the tiny community of Pixian, for almost two years.  Their assignment was cut short because of the political unrest and uncertainty preceding and following the Tiananmen Square massacre.

The papers consist primarily of incoming and outgoing personal correspondence documenting the Umbles' life and work in China. They include the Umbles' perspectives on the Chinese democracy movement.

A sizeable collection of photographic prints and slides depicting faculty, staff, and students, as well as and buildings associated with this Mennonite nursing school in Colorado.  Some images are not labeled.  THe oversize class photograhs are generally composits of individual portraits rather than group photographs.
