Papers collected by Jeff A. Steely, for a Bethel College history seminary paper in spring 1988. Includes sermons, correspondence, diary (photocopy), and a cassette tape of an interview with Loris Habegger.

These papers of a Mennonite bishop and administrator at Hesston College are divided into five series:

(1) Diaries, 1889-1944

(2) Class Lecture Notes, circa 1914-1916, undated

(3) Sermon and Lecture Outlines, undated

(4) Sermon and Bible Conference Notes, 1888-1930, undated

(5) Miscellaneous, 1887-1944

The collection includes a diary 1905-1907; Diary 1907-1909; Diary 1909-1910; and diary 1913-1915. Also included is a diary 1910-1912, a diary 1922-1925, and a variety of correspondence with people involved in mission activities. The diaries from 1905-10 were written when Agnes was single, and when she was between the age of 17 and 23, while living in Illinois.  Her diaries tell of every day events in her life including weather, school work, funerals, visitors, church services in English and German and sermon texts, chores, anxiety over church dissensions, concern for starving in India, great interest in missions, a trip to Oregon, California, and Oklahoma, train ride over Rocky Mountains, and the Inauguration Day of President Taft.  Taken from  “A Guide to Mennonite Women’s Diaries (1840-1950), by Anne Yoder, Mennonite Quarterly Review, October 1996, page 488.

The collection contains Abram Penner’s personal diaries from 1904 to 1940, the time of his death.  Entries are mostly daily events and weather data.  Other records include his travel diary from his trip to Russia, family records, and letters.  There is also an account ledger from the general store in Mountain Lake.

These papers consist of six series:

Includes diaries, autobiography, translations, and a very small amount of correspondence.

This fonds consists of a photocopy of a diary written by Bernhard Hamm which describes the journey to Canada, settling on the East Reserve and then moving to the West Reserve to the village of Neubergthal. A portion of the diary has been transcribed.
