This photo is of two larger buildings and two smaller buildings at camp 2 near Bowsman, Manitoba which was a alternative service camp where conscientious objectors served during the Second World War. Presumably the bigger buildings are the cook shack and the office. Note: Electronic copy only.

Azov Forstei in Russia

This photograph shows a roadway with a building in the background, surrounded by a few trees and a low fence. It is probably the Kaserne in the Azov Forstei in Russia. This photograph can also be found on page 49 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia. There is a picture of a similar building in the book Onsi Tjedils, p. 37.

Marching to work at the Azov Forstei, Russia

This photograph shows a long line of men wearing light colored uniforms, high boots and caps, lined up, ready to go to work at the Azov Forstei in Russia. This photograph must have been sent by Abram Dick to his parents. A German note in the back reads (translated) Then we will survive these years. I am sending you this card so that you can get some idea of how we go to work. I am close to the front. Only my head can be seen because I am standing on the other side. In closing, many greetings and kisses from your loving, and not to be forgotten, son, Abram. Greetings also to the siblings. This photograph shows a group of 5 Forestry Camp workers in their uniforms, and a younger lad at the end, standing in back of a group of 3 women and two younger children, as well as 3 men posed on the ground. It is described as a picnic with visiting family members. The 6th man standing and the man at the far right, seated, are both holding a guitar. This picture also appears on page 61 of Mennonite Alternatove Service in Russia.

A Forestry Camp worker in Russia

This photograph shows an unidentified Forestry Camp worker in uniforma in Russia standing amid palm trees. The suggestion that this may be a guard is written on the back. There are two copies of this photograph, slightly damaged. This picture also appears on page 126 of Mennonite Alternatove Service in Russia, with a note 'To Abram Dueck" and in Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos.

William Dick in the Mennonite Forestry Service in Russia

On this photograph, William Dick (Dueck), brother to Jacob Dick, is posed alongside a steel fence amid palm tree foliage in the background. He is dressed in the uniform of the forestry workers. This picture also appears on page 108 of Mennonite Alternatove Service in Russia, and in Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos.

This photograph shows left to right, Nikolai Peters and Abram Dick, possibly in alternative medical service in Rusisa. They are posed by a bare tree, wearing their uniforms, including winter coats. The German note on the back of the photograph is: "Sending you a pair of soldier lads, whom you will know, at least one of them. The other is Peters. You can imagine how we dress here. It may not be very impressive, but that's how we look. Am having a birthday today, will be eating "Kalwie" which I have brought." This picture also appears on page 45 of Mennonite Alternatove Service in Russia, and in Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos.

Abram Driedger in Alternative Service in Russia

This photograph shows Abram Driedger dressed in the Forestry Service uniform, posed at an arbored gate holding on to a bicycle. This is probably the Asov Forestry Camp. Abram Driedger is a brother-in-law to Abram Dick, donor of this photograph collection. This photograph also appears on page 108 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia, and in Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos as No. 26.

Forstei Band

This photoraph shows a 14 member brass band of men in the Forestry Service in Russia. They are dressed in their forestry uniform, 9 standing and 5 perched in the grass. The name Kathe Warkentin is written on the reverse of the photograph. It can also be found in the Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos as No. 26 and.on page 58 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia where two men are identified - Abram Dueck, third from left, and Nikolai Peters, third from right.

A train station

This photograph is taken from a higher perch showing the top of the railroad and the train station, taken by a Sanitaeter, probably in the area of Mount Ararat. This photograph can also be found on page 84 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

Johann Cornies in the Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia

This is a full-length portrait of Johann Cornies when he served in the Alternative Medical Service on the Red Cross trains in World War I in Russia. He has a large, curled-up moustache and is holding on to a chair with his right hand. The background appears to be a canvas painting of a room with a large decorated window and a bouquet of flowers in a vase on the ledge. The floor is covered with a cloth. "Johann Cornies B.C." is written on the reverse side. This photograph can also be found in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia, p. 112.
