A funeral in the Forestry Camp near Yalta

This photograph shows a large group of men posed in front of some bare trees, alongside a light colored coffin on a stand, all without their caps on. A German note in the front reads: "? Plett, died in the South Coast Forestry Camp. The son of a Molotschna bishop. 1916. In the Crimean mountains outside of Yalta. The address of P.J. Sawatzky is noted on the reverse, R.R. #2, Ruthven, Ont. This photo also appears on page 146 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

This is a photo of a group of people posing outside against a building. Mary's sister Tina Goertzen (Dyck) is sitting on the left in the first row. Mary Koop (Dyck) is on the far right in the second row and Peter Koop is standing right behind her.

A phylloxera unit in Crimea

This photo shows 24 men in the phylloxera unit standing in front of their tents, set up in a clearing, with the forested hills in the background. Their task was insect and pest control in vineyards. The photo includes Gerhard Neufeld of Paulsheim, who was shot the night after his auction sale just prior to emigration to Canada in 1926, and David Heidebrecht, who later ordained as a minister in 1921 and later settled in Alberta. Both Neufeld and Heidebrecht were issued silver watches, in recognition of their service.

An outing with the Forester's car in the Crimea.

This photograph shows a group of 11 men with a parked automobile, enjoying a picnic on the road leading into a forest. Their beverage has been prepared and is served with a samovar. The German note on the reverse reads, "An outing on the South Coast Forstei. The Forester's car. At the far right - P.J. Sawatzky." This photo is also in the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick on page 67.

Camel team - Crimea

This is a photo of a camel team pulling a wagon with two men. David Hofer and C. E. Krehbiel are standing alongside. There is also a car on the left side of the photograph. This photograph also appears in D. M. Hofer's book, Die Hungersnot in Russland, p. 128 and is described - on the way to the Crimea.
