A funeral in the Forestry Camp near Yalta

This photograph shows a large group of men posed in front of some bare trees, alongside a light colored coffin on a stand, all without their caps on. A German note in the front reads: "? Plett, died in the South Coast Forestry Camp. The son of a Molotschna bishop. 1916. In the Crimean mountains outside of Yalta. The address of P.J. Sawatzky is noted on the reverse, R.R. #2, Ruthven, Ont. This photo also appears on page 146 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

A group of men during their time of Alternative Service. Jakob Bergen, Elvera’s father is seated, the 3rd from the left. The man seated 1st at the left may by Martin Duerksen, brother-in-law of Jakob Bergen. This is one of four pictures which he sent home to the family while working in Alternative Service during WW I. See M2004Goe # 3, 4, and 5 which are related to Alternative Service.

This photograph shows a group of 16 young men serving in the Alternative Forestry Service in Russia. They are posed in their uniforms in front of one of the buildings. The two men reclining on the ground are wearing white aprons. The photograph is stamped on the reverse, possibly with the name of the Forstei or maybe the photographer? The name Edgar R., written in pencil, also appears on the back. This photograph is mounted on decorated matting 282 x 222 cm. OS
