Gymnastics in the Forestry Service

This portrait is an outdoor scene showing 12 men on the ground underneath a high wooden stand. Four men are perched high on the top beam, 3 along the side and two are dangling in the middle on ropes. Peter J. Warkentin is on the right. This photograph can also be found on page 65 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick. It was probably taken on the Anadol Forestry Camp.

Musicians in the Forestry Service Camp in Russia

This photograph shows a group of 14 musicians with their brass instruments and music stands, seated outside - none are identified. Greeting written in German on the reverse - Dear Friend! Greetings from afar. Wish you success with the thresshing; how is it going, almost finished? Why are none of you writing; Abram doesn't write at all. Would you at least please write. Greetings again in closing. Fr. Enns? The name and address to whom the card is sent is written in Russian. There is a postage stamp on the reverse and the card has been stamped with the date 22-7-09. This photograph shows two men with rifles posed in front of a hedge, beside a man with an accordian, which is described as a "two rower" and a popular instrument in the Alternative Service camp on page 110 of Mennonite Alternate Service in Russia. All are dressed in the Alternative Service uniform, including caps.

This photograph shows a larger group of men relaxing on the ground, in a clearing of trees, eating their lunch. One man is wearing a white apron and at least one man is reading as he eats. Entrance to a forestry camp in Russia

This photograph shows the yard of a forestry camp in Russia with bare trees showing one of the buildings in the background and the low fence and entrance gate in the foreground. A few men of the Alternative Forestry service can be seen on the yard, one with a bicycle. There are at least 3 young girls perched on the fence at the right. This photograph can also be seen in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, on page 135.

Alternative Service men enjoying a picnic

This photograph shows a group of 5 men, two women and 4 children, seated on the ground in the woods, enjoying a picnic. It was probably taken at the forestry camp where the men were in Alternative Service. The men are all dressed in their uniforms. This photograph can also be found in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick on page 62 with the caption; "A picnic with visitors". No one is identified.

Mennonite men in Alternative Forestry Service in Russia

This photograph shows about 20 men posed alongside and on top of a fence as well as on the grounds and the covered walkway alongside the building in the background. Two men are perched on a two-wheeled cart with a large barrel. This photo also appears on page 51 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia where the location is identified as the South Coast camp near Yalta, Crimea, August 14, 1911.

This photograph shows 3 men in Alternative Service uniforms holding a stick with fresh game on the end over a smoky bonfire. Further to the right a man with an apron, holding a little girl in his arm, is watching the procedure. Another man in uniform is watching from the doorway of a shed behind him.
