This photograph shows a group of 11 Mennonite men posing alongside a fence amid the shrubbery in their Forestry Service uniforms. Five men are standing, 5 seated on a bench and two on the ground. A man in the Alternative Forestry Service in Russia

This portrait shows a slightly older man in winter clothing and a thin cane in his right hand, seated on wooden branches with wood chips? Scattered on his overcoat. There are some more tree branches leaning against the wall behind him. This photograph can also be found on page 150 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick.

This photograph shows a group of 6 Mennonite men in the Alternative Foresty Service in Russia. They are posed among the rocks, wearing their fur winter hats. This photograph also appears on p. 127 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia. They are identified as (l - r): Jakob Dick, Abram Rogalsky, Abram Dick, David Dick, Uncle Wilhelm, and Jakob Tiessen.

Five Mennonite men in the Forestry Service in Russia

This photograph shows a group of 5 men posed in front of a bush, wearing their Forestry Service uniforms. As identified by Abram Dueck, on reverse of photograph (l- r): David Dick, Uncle Abram, John Matthies, Heidebrecht, Abram Dick. This photograph also appears on p. 54 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia. There are three copies of this photograph, one slightly larger than the other. The larger copy was from Peter Warkentin, Anadol, 1905-1908. The two smaller copies are 12.5 x 9.3 cm and 13.5 x 9 cm. It has a brief German greeting on the back, (translation) Sending you herewith another group of men. You will probably know all of them. Greetings from Abram Duecks. Nick Peters' photocopied photographs also has two copies of this photograph.

Mennonite men in the Alternative Forestry Service in Russia

This photograph shows a group of 15 men in the Mennonite Forestry Service in Russia (possibly Anadol), 6 are standing in the back, 7 are seated and two are posed on the floor. They are all wearing the uniform of the Alternative Service cap and boots included, except one man in seated in the middle who is dressed up in civilian clothes, hat, suit and tie. Dietrich Sawatzky is in the top left. This photograph can also be found on page 152 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick.

Gymnastics in the Forestry Service

This portrait is an outdoor scene showing 12 men on the ground underneath a high wooden stand. Four men are perched high on the top beam, 3 along the side and two are dangling in the middle on ropes. Peter J. Warkentin is on the right. This photograph can also be found on page 65 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick. It was probably taken on the Anadol Forestry Camp.

Initiation to camp life at the Azov Forstei

This photograph a group of about 20 men in the Azov Forstei in their uniforms and caps. The 2nd or 3rd year recruits are practising all kinds of often humiliating chicanery on the newcomers to initiate them into the forestry life. As one can see, one man is forced to sit inside a basket. This photo appears to be a Post Card sent to Abram Dick by Herman Enns on Nov. 12, 1908. He has written: " Herzlichen Gruss, lieber Freund, von Vladimir . Kannst dir eine kleine Vorstellung machen von unserer Aufnahmen. Gruesse Fr. Sara u. alle Fraeulein von deinem Hermann Enns." The English translation is - Sincere greetings, my dear friend from Vladimir. This gives you a small idea of our welcoming initiations. Give my greetings to Miss Sara and all the other ladies from your Hermann Enns.

Musicians in the Forestry Service Camp in Russia

This photograph shows a group of 14 musicians with their brass instruments and music stands, seated outside - none are identified. Greeting written in German on the reverse - Dear Friend! Greetings from afar. Wish you success with the thresshing; how is it going, almost finished? Why are none of you writing; Abram doesn't write at all. Would you at least please write. Greetings again in closing. Fr. Enns? The name and address to whom the card is sent is written in Russian. There is a postage stamp on the reverse and the card has been stamped with the date 22-7-09. A group of men in the Forestry Camp

This photograph shows a group of 10 men standing and 3 seated in front of them, all dressed in the uniform of the Forestry Camp workers, probabnly the Azov Forstei. They include Abram Dick (Dueck), John Mathies, and Nikolai Peters (fourth man, standing slightly further back). This photograph is also included in the 13 pages of photocopied pictures from Nikolai Peters.

Azov Forstei in Russia

This photograph shows a roadway with a building in the background, surrounded by a few trees and a low fence. It is probably the Kaserne in the Azov Forstei in Russia. This photograph can also be found on page 49 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia. There is a picture of a similar building in the book Onsi Tjedils, p. 37.

Marching to work at the Azov Forstei, Russia

This photograph shows a long line of men wearing light colored uniforms, high boots and caps, lined up, ready to go to work at the Azov Forstei in Russia. This photograph must have been sent by Abram Dick to his parents. A German note in the back reads (translated) Then we will survive these years. I am sending you this card so that you can get some idea of how we go to work. I am close to the front. Only my head can be seen because I am standing on the other side. In closing, many greetings and kisses from your loving, and not to be forgotten, son, Abram. Greetings also to the siblings. This photograph also appears on p. 52 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

This photograph shows two men with rifles posed in front of a hedge, beside a man with an accordian, which is described as a "two rower" and a popular instrument in the Alternative Service camp on page 110 of Mennonite Alternate Service in Russia. All are dressed in the Alternative Service uniform, including caps.
