Unidentified men

This photo shows six young men -- all neatly dressed in black pants and shirts, and shiny boots. J.P. Dyck, narrator of the slide presentation used this photo to speak about the experience of non-resistant Mennonite boys during the implementation of communism in Russia. All boys born in 1901 were first called for 1 1/2 years of service [at age 21] and then those born in 1902. They were assigned hard labour or prison sentences.

A phylloxera unit in Crimea

This photo shows 24 men in the phylloxera unit standing in front of their tents, set up in a clearing, with the forested hills in the background. Their task was insect and pest control in vineyards. The photo includes Gerhard Neufeld of Paulsheim, who was shot the night after his auction sale just prior to emigration to Canada in 1926, and David Heidebrecht, who later ordained as a minister in 1921 and later settled in Alberta. Both Neufeld and Heidebrecht were issued silver watches, in recognition of their service.

Group of men in forestry service in Russia

This photo shows a group of Mennonite men lined up with their planting tools and ready to march. They are mostly older men. The man in the 3rd row of marchers, standing by himself, is the commander Johann Dueck. Several men are reclined on the grass in the foreground including a young boy. Most likely taken at the Asov forestry camp (compare photo is Quiring`s Als Ihre Zeit..., p. 167.)
