Personnel of a Red Cross train

This is a photo of the personnel of a Red Cross train. Most of the men are Mennonites. The woman in the second row from the back, to the right of the man with a high cap, is the daughter of Count Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer. [HR 237]
An original photo has labeled as Copy 2 (Acc. No. 2012-005). This medical unit (Sanitaetsdienst) was identified as No. 187. David Wiebe (1885-1937) is identified on the photo. Peter Ewert (1897-1963) is identified as the writer of the Russian text on the reverse side.

Pig butchering

This is a photo of pig butchering which was always a big day in the life of our people. Here is a clear and factual photo of such an event. At the back grandpa with his cane, not active but present and closely observing. [HR 86]

Dead bodies piled up like logs in the winter

This photo shows a scene from the famine in Russia during the 1921-1922 winter. Dead bodies, victims of starvation, piled up like logs, to buried later due to the frozen ground. [HR 260]

This photo shows a horse-drawn wagon that has several dead bodies on it, which are being collected for burial in a common grave.

Hospital (?)

This photo shows a building with a sign attached to the 2nd floor balcony. It has a red cross symbol at the top, then the words "Mennonite Lazaret". Was this a place where Mennonite medics (Sanitaeter) took care of wounded soldiers in Russia during the First World War?

Winter funeral

This is a photo shows a coffin on a sleigh being pulled by horses in the winter with a group gathered around for the funeral ceremony. [HR 257]

Isaak Regehr family

This is a photo of the Isaak Regehr family. Mr. Regehr was a teacher and minister in the Mennonite Brethren Church. [HR 118]
