Biographical history

Williard Krabill was born in 1926 in Louisville, Ohio.  During World War II, he volunteered for Civilian Public Service, working as a smoke jumper in the Pacific Northwest and at the Ypsilanti State Mental Hospital.  He graduated from Goshen College in 1949 and from Jefferson Medical College in 1953.  He later earned a master's degree in public health from the University of California - Berkeley.

he practiced medicine in Goshen, Ind., worked as a concultant for Mennonite Mutual Aid, and served on the Mennonite Board of Missions' Health and Welfare Committee and Student Services Committee.  At Goshen College, Krabill pioneered a human sexuality class that became the most popular class on campus.

The Mennonite Medical Association named Krabill  Doctor of the Year in 1990.  He died in 2009.

Scope and content

The collection consists of subject files on medicine, public health, and peace, as well as working files documenting Krabill's service on the Mennonite Board of Missions Health and Welfare Committee.  The subject files contain a number of papers and articles pertaining to AIDS, homosexuality, and alcohol and drug abuse in the context of the Mennonite Church.  Other less well documented subjects in the collecrtion include Krabill's Civilian Public Service work, mission work in Asia, career as a physician and professor at Goshen College, and his spiritual life.  The collection includes more than 30 audiocassette sound recordings of speeches by Krabill and others on medicine, spirituality, Christianity, and other topics.
