Biographical history

Silas Hertzler was born near Baldwin, Maryland in 1888 to Amish parents, Joseph K. and Nancy J. Miller Hertzler.  In 1924, he married Anna Weaver, and together they had five children.

Hertzler graduated Goshen College with a B. A. in 1913 and Yale University with a B. D. in 1917.  He also received a masters in psychology from Columbia University Teachers College in 1918 and a Ph.D. in psychology from Yale University.  Other educational institutions he attended include Garrett Biblical Institute, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, and Union Theological Seminary.

Hertzler taught high school in Manitoba from 1913 to 1915.  From 1919 to 1920, Hertzler served with the American Friends Service Committee at an orphanage in Syria that served refugee children of the Armenian genocide. 

He was a member of the Goshen College faculty from 1920 to 1958.  He served in a number of positions at the college, including principal of the academy, registrar, director of teacher education, and professor of education and psychology.  He taught mathematics in Oslo Township Junior High School (near Elkhart, Indiana) from 1958 to 1960, and at Tabor College from 1960 to 1964. 

Hertzler served as a member of the Mennonite Board of Education and the Board of Directors of the Mennonite Historical Society.  He died in 1975.

These papers primarily document the life and work of Silas Hertzler, but includes some material pertinent to his wife, Anna Weaver Hertzler.  The papers are divided into seven series:

Photographs and the audiocassette of Hertzler's funeral service were originally cataloged as HM4-200 and HM6-106, respectively.  In December 2011, these separate collections were merged into the Silas and Anna Weaver Hertzler papers, HM1-197.
