A brass band from a Mennonite forestry service camp in Russia

This photo shows ten men with their instruments -- 3 cornet players, 1 player on trombone, 3 euphonium players, 1 tuba player, 1 player on bass drum and cymbal, and a conductor, who is sitting in the middle of the front row with his baton. The photo is taken out doors with trees and a building in the background.

A phylloxera unit in Crimea

This photo shows 24 men in the phylloxera unit standing in front of their tents, set up in a clearing, with the forested hills in the background. Their task was insect and pest control in vineyards. The photo includes Gerhard Neufeld of Paulsheim, who was shot the night after his auction sale just prior to emigration to Canada in 1926, and David Heidebrecht, who later ordained as a minister in 1921 and later settled in Alberta. Both Neufeld and Heidebrecht were issued silver watches, in recognition of their service.

A rabbit hunt

This photo shows (l-r): Johann Heidebrecht (Nikolaidorf), assistant forester Carl Prokopenko (?), Jacob Boschmann (Petershagen), Johann Janzen lying down, Franz Toews on his knees (Alexanderkrone), Gerhard Warkentin (Ebenfeld) and Starzky Dietrich Friesen. On a rabbit hunt they would also shoot ducks and other birds, besides rabbits.

Abram Dick in Alternative Service in Russia

This photograph shows Abram Dick, 1890-1970, probably while he is serving in the Asov Forestry Camp. He is wearing the Forestry uniform posing at an arbored gate with a bicycle. The name Kathe Warkentin is written on the reverse side, along with Abram J. Dick's address, 56 Wigle Str., Leamington, Ont. This photograph also appears on page 61 of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia, and in Nick Peters' collection of photocopied photos, No. 25.

This fonds contains a composite photograph consisting of 167 individual portraits of Mennonite men that served in the Imperial Russia's Forestry service at Razin, a photograph of teacher Heinrich Johan Dueck (1862-1922) with students of school(Dueck was a teacher in Kleefeld, Gnadental and Klippenstal, Molotschna), and a 1903 funeral photo of 18 year-old Heinrich Albrecht of Prangenau (South Russia) showing the coffin being transported with a horse drawn carriage. This fonds also includes background information on the Razin Forestei where members of the Warkentin and Albrecht family served plus genealogical information on the Albrecht, Peters, von Kampen, and Warkentin families. Some of the data is an update for the published family history book entitled, "John Warkentin and his Descendants 1820-1990".
