Administrative history

The Phalo Club of Goshen, Indiana, was founded in 1913. Its members were primarily the wives of Goshen College faculty members. The women began the club as a means to foster intellectual persuits not otherwise available to them as wives and mothers. The club's name is an acronym for "Philosophy, History, Art, Literature, Oratory."

Membership in the club is restricted to twenty women, and the club primarily serves as a venue for book discussions. The correspondence file indicates that the organization also makes charitable contributions and engages in some political activism. In 2009, the club observed its 90th anniversary. The club ceased meeting in 2018.
