Biographical history
Peter P. Kehler, teacher and minister, was born on May 14,1882 to Peter and Susana (nee Braun) Kehler in Old Altona, Manitoba. He was the third of five children. At the age of five his mother died and his father remarried. Agatha Hamm, a widow with three children of her own, became his stepmother. Kehler was baptized on May 27, 1901 and became a member of the Sommerfeld Church. Two months later he married Susanna Warkentin on July 9,1901. Their marriage produced nine children, three of whom died in childhood. Kehler began teaching at the age of 19. During his 27 years as a teacher he taught at private schools in Neuhoffnung, Altbergthal, Hochstadt, the village of Altona and in the Neubergthal district.
Peter P. Kehler served as teacher at Neubergthal from 1919 to 1929. He taught English, German, and Religion. He was a good teacher in academics but was also known for his concern for the spiritual lives of his students, teaching and interpreting bible passages.
Susanna died in 1933 and two years later Kehler married Margaretha Loewen, widow of Henry Grabinsky and mother of four children. It was through this marriage that Kehler became active in the Bergthaler Church where he was ordained in 1938. He served the church faithfully for 25 years. Kehler died at the age of 82 on August 30, 1964.
