Nikolai N Friesen was born April 15, 1901 in Kamenetz, Neu Samara, Russia. His parents were Nikolai J Friesen and Margaretha Dyck. His mother died when he was 4 years old and then his father married Katherina Stobbe. Nikolai married Elizabeth Duerksen on March 11, 1924 in Ischalka, Neu Samara. In 1925 they moved to Canada with one small son and later had another 6 children.

Back in Russia, Nikolai had completed high school and received his teaching certificate thus becoming a teacher. In Canada they settled in Mayfair, Saskatchewan where he became a lay minister of the Mayfair Mennonite Church and in 1929 he was ordained in Rabbit Lake, SK. In 1939 he was called to pastor the Mennonite Church in Black Creek, Vancouver Island, BC where he helped to establish a Bible school He derived his living from farming and driving school bus. Subsequently he was asked to be an itinerant evangelist among the BC Mennonite churches and in 1953 he was ordained as a Bishop. In the same year he was called to be the lead minister at the Bethel Mennonite Church in Aldergrove where he served until 1979 after 50 years of service. Over the years he was chairman of Canadian Mennonite Pastors, Conference of Deacons, British Columbia Mennonite Conference and also was a member of the Missions Committee of the General Conference Mennonite Church. He was also active in teaching and evangelism in Mexico during his career. He sent his sermons to his contacts in Russia, Mexico and throughout Canada.

Nikolai Friesen died October 28, 1995 in Abbotsford, BC.
