Administrative history

Mennonite Historical Society of BC

This organization has been interchangeably named the Mennonite Historical Society of BC or the BC Mennonite Historical Society. It was first organized on Dec. 12, 1972 in Columbia Bible Institute (now CBC) and for most of the years until 1993 Gerhard Peters was the visionary leader of this program. Through its operation over more than 35 years the focus has shifted from concentrating on a museum featuring an enlarged collection of photographic history depicting Mennonite life from the Vistula valley, to the Dnieper, the Red, the Saskatchewan and finally the Fraser River, as well as a sizable collection of interesting artifacts – to an environmentally controlled Archival Centre. The present purpose is to collect and preserve valuable historical records in the interest of nurturing faith and the identity of the church and to provide an opportunity for research. The earlier idea of a Mennonite Museum was supported by many older pioneers. Their intent was commendable – to establish for the coming generations a visible symbol of gratitude to God. Gradually a new vision emerged, a vision that attracted the imagination of another group of people who are showed enthusiasm for a Mennonite information and research centre. This encouraged the Board of directors to promote Mennonite Heritage Lectures and later to take ownership of the Archival Centre. In 1980 the Historical Society was incorporated and the official name became the Mennonite Historical Society of BC although it has taken some time for this name to come into full usage.

Earliest attempts to salvage treasured archival material began at the Clearbrook Community Centre during the 1970’s and 1980’s where some work was done to organize and record these materials. In 1986 an agreement was signed to transfer the files and other materials to the CBC campus where some basement rooms were used for sorting and display until 1991. Subsequently, in 1987, the Mennonite Archival Association of BC was formed to oversee the development of the archives and in 1989 Columbia Bible College agreed to take ownership of the Archives. In 1992, the Archives moved into new facilities in the Resource Centre of the College and in 1994 the ownership of the Archives was transferred to back to the MHS of BC.

The move to Garden Park Tower was made in 1997 where it is still located in 2009. Membership stands at about 600 and a variety of lectures, musical and arts events have attracted many participants. This is an excellent centre for historical and genealogical research and for the ongoing activities of the Mennonite Historical Society of BC.
