This photo shows a large group gathered at the site of a mass burial in the village of Blumenort, Molotschna. The deaths happened at the hand of Nestor Makhno's contingent between Monday, November 11 and Wednesday, November 13, 1919, and the burial happened on Thursday, November 14, 1919.

People of Blumenort are gathered around the mass grave of 27 men. One night they were all herded into the basement of a house and shot to death. Two men related to Elvera’s husband were among those who died.

With the revolution, in too many of our Mennonite cemeteries, appeared the mass graves. In some of them as many as sixty brothers and sisters, cruelly murdered, were laid to rest. This one is found in the village of Blumenort, Molotschna [HR 258] (2 prints)
