Biographical history

Born in Waterloo Township; married Nora (Brubacher) in June 1941. Performed Alternative Service in British Columbia: Emory Creek (summer 1942), Cowichan (1942-1943). Went to Victoria and Vancouver to work on the portable sawmill project (winter 1942/1943). Returned home in November 1943. After the war, started L.A. Bechtel Construction and later Preston Building Supply.

Archival history

Photographs donated to the Archives after an interview with Bechtel conducted for the Alternative Service in World War II oral history project in 1975.
