Biographical history

Born in Schoenbrun, South Russia, graduated from the Halbstadt Zentralschule , married Anna Rempel of Tiegenhof (Rempel family estate), served in the Medical corps in Moscow during the First World War, and immigrated to Canada in 1924. After a year in Waterloo, Ontario, he moved to Manitoba, where he bought a farm near Grunthal. He became the leader of the newly organized Elim Church, was ordained to the ministry on 19 June 1927, and ordained as elder (Aeltester) on 10 October 1943.

Archival history

The materials were in the care of a nephew, Henry Rempel of Winnipeg, until they were given to his sister, Margaret Heese of Wymark in 2009.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of notes and notebooks about the founding of Elim Mennonite Church in Grunthal, Manitoba in 1928 by the congregation's first bishop (Aeltester Johann J. Enns, 1884-1965), notebooks created by Johann Enns in the course of his leadership of the church (addresses of people he visited, notes taken at conferences including expenses, notes taken at events), and sermons prepared and delivered from 1928-1965.
