Biographical history
Jacob N. Hoeppner, farmer, minister and teacher, was born on July 10,1901 near Winkler, Manitoba. He was the oldest of seven children born to Jacob and Maria (nee Neufeld) Hoeppner. After attending school in Plum Coulee, he went on to complete one year at the Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna. He began teaching at the age of 17 and did his normal school training at Manitou and Winnipeg. During his teaching career, Hoeppner taught in Bloomfield, Steinfeld, Melba, Plum Coulee, Hamburg, Kleefeld and Altona. On July 26, 1925 Hoeppner married Susan Sawatsky. The wedding was held at the bride's home with Aeltester Jacob Hoeppner, the grooms grandfather, officiating. Their marriage produced 9 children, one of which died in 1928 at the age of two. Hoeppner was elected and ordained in 1932 to ministry in the Bergthaler Mennonite Church at Plum Coulee. There he served until 1935 at which time he and his family moved to Altona where he served as resident minister. He taught at Elim Bible School in Gretna and later Altona. J.N. Hoeppner was also active on the Canadian Mennonite Board of Colonization. During his years of service Hoeppner was involved in youth ministry, home missions, and Christian education. Jacob N. Hoeppner died on April 16, 1950 after suffering a heart attack.

This series of material contains considerable missions correspondence generated by Reverend J.N. Hoeppner, minister of the Bergthaler Mennonite church of Manitoba. He served on many committees such as the Canadian Conference Home Mission Committee, Mennonite Pioneer Mission, Board of Colonization, Manitoba Youth Organization and various music committees. The correspondence in this series reflects these involvements. Other correspondence with individuals and institutions include Benjamin Ewert, J.J. Thiessen, P. Vogt, D.H. Loewen, Henry Giesbrecht (regarding pacifism) and Grace Bible Institute.
