An outing on the Dnieper River-Chortitza Island

This is a photo of a group of men and women from Schoenwiese sitting in a boat on the shores of the Dnieper River. They were on an outing on the first of May with Arthur Slagel, the American Mennonite Relief Worker. On the photograph are the Thiessens, Miss Hamm and Arthur Slagel. Possibly Mr. Suderman took the picture. See Nos. 665-78 & 665-79 for more details.

This is a photo of a group of men and women on the Island of Chortitza sitting on the banks of the Dnieper River. They were from Schoenwiese on an outing in May with Arthur Slagel the American Mennonite Relief Worker. He describes it as a nice sandy island, not far from the Alexandrowsk shore, which can be seen in the background. (Left to right): Miss Hamm, Mr. Thiessen, Arthur Slagel, Miss Thiessen, Franz Thiessen and Mrs. Thiessen, whom he describes as the erstwhile "belle of Schoenwiese".

Gravestone of Jacob Hoeppner who was buried in Insel Chortitza. He was the Mennonite deputy to Russia from Prussia. The gravestone was later moved to Manitoba.

Jakob Hoeppner / Henry Pauls farmstead

This is a photo of a reproduction of the painting by Henry Pauls of their homestead on the island of Chortitza. (His father was Bernhard Pauls (1877-1963). It was formerly the home of deputy Jakob Hoeppner who negotiated with the Russia government. [HR 47]

This is a photo of the Jakob Hoeppner monument in the Chortitza Island. This monument was later removed and set up at the Mennonite Village Museum in Steinbach, Manitoba (HR 106).
