Early records of the organization that evolved into the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities, the mission agency of the (old) Mennonite Church.  Materials include a brief history of early Mennonite mission organizations, a cash book, the 1892 annual meeting report, and an early minute book containing minutes for the annual and occasional meetings of the Mennonite Evangelizing Committee (1882-1892), the Mennonite Evangelizing Board of America (1892-1896), and the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board (1896-1906).  In 1906, this board merged with the Mennonite Board of Charitable Homes and Missions to form the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities.

The papers contain a hodgepodge of information pertaining to Ruth and Rhoda Resslers' various stints in Japan as mission and relief workers. Materials include correspondence, activity reports, the newsletter of the Hokkaido Mennonite Fellowship, miscellaneous materials relating to Mennonite mission work in Japan, and financial records. The Resslers' papers also contain a number of photographs, scrapbooks, and a handful of slides. Researchers should be aware, however, that many of the images are not labeled. The collection holds a several audiocassettes as well: recorded lectures presented by the Resslers in Japan, an oral history interview with Rhoda and Ruth Ressler, and a multi-tape oral history with Rhoda Ressler. Also included is an 1889 statement on dress and prayer coverings, unrelated to Mennonite mission work in Japan.

Records of a predecessor Mennonite mission agency to the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities, including incorporation documents, financial and insurance records, minutes (incomplete), correspondence, and a foreign missions manual.

Researchers should consult the series IV-001 and IV-002 for records regarding the previous incarnations of the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board.  Series IV-001 contains the complete minutes of the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board and its predecessor organizations.

A small set of personal papers documenting the work of this Mennonite missionary couple in India at the turn of the century.  The papers consist primarily of Jacob Burkhard's outgoing correspondence, but also include incoming correspondence to Jacob Burkhold, the memoirs and diary of Jacob Burkhard, letters and notes written by Mary Burkhard, scrapbooks of clippings regarding Mennonite missionary work in India, and Mary Burkhard's Bibles.

Mennonite Board of Charitable Homes and Missions (Rittman, Ohio) Records

Records of a predecessor organization to the Mennonite Board of Missions, formed in error under the assumption that an organization incorporated in Ohio was required in order to acquire and manage property in Ohio.  This organization, therefore should not be understood as a competing organization to the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board and its predecessor organizations. Records include incorporation documents and by-laws, legal documents pertaining to the transfer of property, correspondence, and annuity contracts.

Assorted records created by the American Mennonite Mission in India, including membership and marriage registers for Indian churches, maps, pamphlets, furniture inventories, hospital records, articles and leaflets, and other miscellaneous materials.  This series includes the statement of comity agreed to by the various denominational mission organizations in India, which stated mission workers' commitment to corking cooperatively rather than competitively.

Blanche Sell Papers

Correspondence, photographs, and miscellaneous materials associated with Blanche Sell's 35 years of missionary service in India with the Mennonite Board of Missions.  While outgoing correspondence relating the daily work and spiritual life of Mennonite missionaries in Dhamtari will be of most interest to researchers, this collection also holds substantial incoming correspondence from Sell's mother, Elizabeth Sell, and sister, Doris Shenk.  Most of the photographs are snapshots with fair to excellent captioning.  They include images of Indian spiritual and medical leaders, including P. J. Malagar and Dr. Martin.  Miscellaneous materials include a Mennonite Board of Missions India calendar (1952), texts of missionary messages Sell delivered to various Mennonite congregations in the 1980s, and autograph books.

Incoming and outgoing admistrative correspondence from the highest office of the American Mennonite Mission in India.  Correspondence includes communications between the mission board in the United States as well as Indian government officials.  These records also include ledger books listing the names of donors who provided financial sponsorship of Indian orphans.
