A set of personal papers documenting Alan Hochstetler's voluntary service work in Vietnam and Korea under the auspices of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).  The papers consist primarily of correspondence from Hochstetler to his family in Nappanee, Indiana.  The letters provide a lot of detail about the daily work and activities of Hochstetler and other MCC volunteers.  In his correspondence, Hochstetler also discusses the weather, major political events, and his relationships with his fellow voluntary service workers.

Other materials in this collection include correspondence from MCC and the selective service, slides and photographs taken during his service work, photographs taken during a 1997 trip to Vietnam, clippings, a Vietnam diary, a hand drawn map of the Leprosarium, the Tidings of the Banmethouoat Leprosarium, a service certificate from MCC, and a nine-page manuscript containing personal reflections and recollections of his service work and his return trips to Vietnam.

Files associated with various Mennonite voluntary service sites no longer in operation.  Materials vary according to unit, but researchers may find in this series activity reports, financial reports, correspondence, personnel lists, and other official records.  This series also includes some photographs of Voluntary Service units and work.

This 140 item color slide show focuses on the people doing voluntary service with MCC in Manitoba. Locations and activities include Native gardening, Sandy Lake Native Reserve, Rossbrook House, Carter Day Care, MCC offices, Bethania personal care home, Marymound, Community Dispute Centre, Langside VS house, Pregnancy Distress, MCI (Mennonite Collegiate Institute), VORP (Victim Offender Reconciliation Program), SALT (Serving and Learning Together). It appears that the slide are not all in order but tthere is no numbering system on the slides so original order is difficult to determin. Included is a script and audio cassette #2548.

This slide show consists of 80 color slides depicting the landscape, MCC volunteers, the people and the gardens people planted in the communities of Pinedock, Bloodvein, Sachigo Lake, Ponask, Muskrat Dam between 1959-1982. Some photos were taken by Menno Wiebe, Laura Loewen and Keith Moyer and put together in this format in 1983 by Menno Wiebe and Kathy Sawatzky. Included is a script and an audio cassette #2323.

This slide show consists of 74 color slides of MCC's Voluntary Service program SALT (Serving and Learning Together). The photos depict MCC SALT voluntary service people in various locations often socializing. The photos were taken between 1979-1982 and gathered together in this form in 1982/1983. Two audio cassettes for this presentation can be found in the audio cassette collection #2321 and 2322. -- Note: Numbers 2,10,71 are missing.

This slide show consists of 21 color cartoon slides which talk about the MCC Native gardening program. With the slides is an audio cassette, #2324.

This slide show consists of 79 color slides of MCC's Voluntary Service program in Canada. Included with the slides is a script. The photos depict MCC voluntary service people in various locations working in an office, gardening, woodworking, child care etc. The photos were taken between 1980-1981 and gathered together in this form in 1982. Some of the photos were taken by Robb Nickel and Allan Kroeker. An audio cassette of the script can be found in the audio cassette collection #2320. -- Note: Numbers 4,6,9,11-13,24,27,38, 40-42 are missing.

This series consists primarily of staff and board meeting minutes from 1935 through 1981.  Other materials include reports about various service and relief programs, descriptions of visits to voluntary service units, financial reports, and subject files from 1951 through 1970.  Materials in the late 1960s and 1970 address issues of race and ethnicity in the (old) Mennonite Church.

Later minutes of the Service Ministries division are most likely interfiled with the Mennonite Board of Missions Executive Board Minutes (IV-06-007).

This slide show consists of color slides taken in 1979 depicting young adults in various voluntary service activities. These include serving at Marymound, and at YOU (Youth Orientation Units), founded by Peter Rempel. In the YOU program young adults work in a small lumber mill, make log homes, and take care of farm animals. The script lists 69 slides, however only the first 34 remain. Included with these slides is a script and audio cassette #2326.

Assorted brochures, publications, handbooks, and correspondence pertaining to the (old) Mennonite Church's voluntary service program.

Administrative records of a camp facility established by the Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp Association and later administered by the Mennonite Board of Missions. Frontier Boys Village provided a long-term rehabilitation program for adolescent boys completing the requirements of Colorado's juvenile justice system. Records include board meeting minutes, correspondence, financial and development records, policy documents, publicity materials, scrapbooks, and photographs.

Scrapbooks containing snapshots, unit histories, descriptions of work and unit life, and other information about various Voluntary Service (V.S.) units sponsored by the Mennonite Board of Missions.  The scrapbooks appear to have been used in orienting new unit volunteers and in introducing unit work to visitors.
