This collection documents the activities of members of the Civilian Public Service (CPS) Camp #58 in Farnhurst, Delaware from 1942 through 1946. Camp reunion files give insight into how the CPS experience affected the lives of those who served. Included are D. Paul Miller's personal scrapbook during his time of service, materials related to the camp's softball team (the Red Comb Arrows), The Crusaders Quartet, and later circle letters and reunion documents.

Information regarding the World War II experiences of Henry C. Penner, a Mennonite from Wrickler, Manitoba who was arrested for resisting the draft in 1944. Tapes and transcripts of interviews conducted by Leonard Gross with Henry and his son Leonard Penner are included, as is correspondence between the army and Henry’s uncle George Penner concerning the arrest and subsequent court martial. The records of the court martial, some miscellaneous notes and pamphlets, and slides of documents are also included.

This collection contains photos of the experiences of men who were conscientious objectors to war in Canada during the Second World War and were assigned to work in an Alternative Service program. The photos are organized into the following categories:
1-2 camp; 3-11 individuals; 12-25 groups; 26-32 camp life; 33-42 camp cooks; 43-50 vistors; 51-54 misc. Items 1 to 50 were taken in British Columbia.

Mabel V. Brunk Papers

Contains a letter written by Brunk, describing her work as a nurse with Mennonite Central Committee in Pusan, Korea. The scroll, presented to Brunk by the Korean Nursing Association of Pusan, features the Nightingale Pledge written in Korean. Also includes a journal from her experiences working as a "C.O. Girl" in the Hudson River State Hospital for the Insane in Poughkeepsie, NY, during the summer of 1945.

These papers consist primarily of newspaper clippings, court records, and incoming correspondence pertaining to the 1982 conviction of Mennonite conscientious objector and Goshen college student Mark Arden Schmucker on charges of failing to register for the draft.

Researchers should note that this collection does not contain copies of all of the court records for Schmucker's case.  Rather, the court records in this collection are primarily briefs submitted to the court on Schmucker's behalf.

These files also contain some information on overseas voluntary service work.  Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by author or subject.

Researchers should note the restrictions on files marked "confidential."  These files generally do not contain confidential information about the individual whose name is on the folder.  Rather, the files contain confidential information about voluntary service and mission workers supervised by the individual whose name is on the folder.
