A death at Mennonite Collegiate Institute

This photograph shows an outside winter scene, with buildings in the background. In the foreground are two young ladies looking down at a young lady in a coffin. They are both wearing winter coats, with big fur collars. It is indicated that this death occurred during the time when Irene Derksen from Steinbach, MB, was a student at MCI. This would probably be1944-45.

A funeral in the Forestry Camp near Yalta

This photograph shows a large group of men posed in front of some bare trees, alongside a light colored coffin on a stand, all without their caps on. A German note in the front reads: "? Plett, died in the South Coast Forestry Camp. The son of a Molotschna bishop. 1916. In the Crimean mountains outside of Yalta. The address of P.J. Sawatzky is noted on the reverse, R.R. #2, Ruthven, Ont. This photo also appears on page 146 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

Margaret (Dick) Walde, widow of the deceased is standing at the head of the casket. Heinrich Albrecht is in uniform of the Hussars. At the far left is a servant. The rest are brothers and sisters of Margaret (Walde) Albrecht. This item is a copy of Photograph 660:08.

At a wake in Nicaragua

This is a photo of women, surrounded by floral wreaths and bouquets, at the wake service for a Christian Nicaraguan woman killed by U. S.-supported contras. The Baptist resolution on Reagan's request for $100 million for the contras reads: "Any amount of these funds would only serve to increase the number of deaths and to intensify the pain of our suffering people".
