Centennial monument in Chortitza

This is a photo of a second view of the centennial monument in Chortitza. 1789-1889. It was erected by the Chortitza municipality. It must have been 1938 when the Soviets secretly removed the monument and had it buried one night. On the place where this monument had been, another one, in honor of Lenin, was set. During the German occupation the burial place of the centennial monument became known. It was excavated and set on its original place. There it stood when our people had to leave. Today there is no trace of it left. [HR 113]

Behind them are many workers dressed in typical Russian style, both men and women. Oxen and cows, two wagons full of hay, two riders on two horses, and two horses with a buggy are in the background. Further back then are trees and the estate with at least 5 buildings visible and a stone gate. This is the estate that would pass on to Peter and Maria's daughter Katharine and her husband Peter Wiebe.
