Home of Heinrich Kurland & wife Katie

This photo is of the guard house of (Käsemark ?), Poland. This was also the home of Heinrich Kurland and his wife Käte [nee Wiebe] in the background. There are two tall trees beside the guard house. At one side of the photo is the high road that leads across a dam on the Vistula . Most of the photo is open space.

Pontoon Bridge

This is a photo of the pontoon bridge which was built in 1938. The photo was taken at Rotebude, Poland. The bridge was in use until 1973. The photo shows the bridge across the Tote Weichsel. In the foreground are low shrubs at the waterfront. On the other side of the river are taller trees.

Another view of new bridge

This photo is of the Weichsel [Vistula] River with the new bridge, built in 1973, in the background. The river here has a strong current and whirlpools. On the left side of the photo shrubbery can be seen. An electrical transmission tower can also be seen in the background. This tower transmits power to Konigsberg Elbing.

A Dam in the area

This photo is of a dam. Electrical transmission poles run along side it. In the back, behind some trees is a sluice. Here the Weichsel [Vistula] branches off towards the Vistula Lagoon.

This photo is of the Danziger Haupt sluice with locks. In the foreground is a grassy area. There are some trees behind the sluice. Off in the distance is a bridge leading from dam to dam.

Windmill at Schönbann

This photo is of a windmill built as a memorial to Johann Cornies who lived here and was born at Bärwalde. The windmill sits on top of a wooden building. The roof in the centre of the building holding the windmill is flat. The roof at either end of the building is peaked. There are large trees behind the building. On top of the Dam

This photo is of the meadow at the top of the dam at Schönbann (Poland). The remnants of a flagstone road can be seen going through the meadow. Off in the distance is a row of trees. The white dots in the background are cows.

Trees along the river

This is a photo of the Weichsel near Nickelswalde, Poland. This is the place from which many refugees started their journey to freedom in1945. In the background a row of trees can be seen on the opposite shore. In the foreground, grass leads down to the river.

Church at Steegen

This photo is of a church in Steegen (Poland). It was formerly a Protestant church but is now a Catholic church. The church has a tall spire with a flag at the very top. There is a clock on the face of the steeple. The front of the church is Tudor style. At either side of the church are trees. A path leads to the church.

The organ in the church at Steegen

This is a photo of the pipe organ in the church at Steegen. There are seven sets of ornate pipes topped with figurines of angels. The ceiling is painted with Biblical scenes. A model of a three-mast ship is suspended from the ceiling in front of the organ.

Graves of soldiers

This is a photo of the Steegen Cemetery containing the graves of soldiers. There is a wooden cross with a shield on it at the front of the photo. Other crosses can be seen in the background. The cemetery is overgrown with grass and trees.
