Steinbach residents around 1897

This photograph shows a group of 21 adults, men and women, with 10 children including babies, posed in front of the Heinrrich Wiebe residence in Steinbach. The building has shingled siding, with tapestry hung onto the wall for a background. Persons identified by Mrs. George Goossen, Steinbach and from book, Reflections on our heritage, a history of Steinbach and R.M. of Hanover from 1874 by Abe Warkentin, 1971, page 88, as follows: Row 1: lying down, at right, Johann Wiebe; Row 2: 2nd from right, bearded man seated with tall hat, Johann T. Peter Funk (1833) and Maria Krahn (1835) descendants

Three generations of Helena Funk , daughter of Peter Funk and Maria Krahn and John Braun family. Helena Funk was born 7 Jul 1857, died 5 June 1931. John Braun was born 1 Jan 1858 in Bergthal Colony, died 18 Aug 1941. John Braun built a mill in Altona, which burned down right after completion, he immediately built the second one.

Sixteen Children are standing, ( 9 boys, 7 girls); 13 children are knelling in front of them ( 8 boys, 5 girls) Fourteen are sitting down , ( 7 boys, 7 girls) The teacher is standing at the left of the photo, wearing a suit and a white shirt and a tie. The school has large windows, 5 are shown. Behind the teacher is another building, looks like a barn.

Helena is a daughter of Isaak Dueck 1902 (D-57) and Maria (Funk) Jakob Toews is a farmer and works in a saw mill. He lived in Blumengard, East Reserve, then Bergthal Colony, Paraguay.
