Gan Sakakibara Autobiography

A seemingly unpublished memoir of a prominant Japanese Anabaptist, in both Japanese and English translation, solicited by Leonard Gross of the Mennonite Historical Society.  Researchers should be aware that the English translation is incomplete.  Also included with the autobiography is biographical information about Sakakibara and selected articles by and about him, including a Sakakibara's reflections on the Anabaptist Center of Japan.

The papers and photographs in this collection include Lois Gunden Clemen's relief work in France under Mennonite Central Committee from 1941 to 1944. These papers document the struggle of a Baptist military chaplain against the US Air Force to remain a military chaplain while speaking out against the morailty of the First Gulf War. Materials include Robertson's unpublished autobiography, US Air Force documents and exhibits submitted in an inquiry concerning his actions in 1993, letters from congressional representatives and supporters, transcriptions of interviews for a 1994 Dateline NBC television special and viewer reactions, and court documents. This collection also includes Garland's Ph.D. thesis.

Robertson was discharged from the US Air Force in 1993. He became a Mennonite pastor and served Austin Mennonite Church in Austin, Tex. and Christian Peacemaker Teams.

Yorifumi Yaguchi Correspondence and Manuscripts

A small set of personal papers created by a Japanese Mennonite poet. Yaguchi's correspondence consists of incoming letters from English language poets, including James Kirkup, Bill Costley, Sajed Kamal, Jonas Negalha, Robert Bly, Anne Sexton, Gary Snyder, William Stafford, and R. S. Thomas. Other materials include miscellaneous poetry manuscripts and an interview transcription with Yujin Yaguchi, Yaguchi's daughter.

This small set of papers focuses primarily on Weirich's Civilian Public Service (CPS) work building flood control structures in Iowa and serving as a smoke jumper. Materials include an album of photographs and documents, collected articles on smoke jumpers, and newsletters and ephemera from Camp 18 (Denison, Iowa) and Camp 103 (Missoula, Montana). Also included are 26 photographs of First Mennonite Church (Middlebury, Indiana) in the 1950s and 1960s. Subjects include members of the church's baseball team circa 1950.

Gordon Oyer Collection on Civilian Public Service Camp #115 Subunit #30 (Urbana, Ill.)

A set of research materials assembled by Gordon Oyer to write an article on the history Civilian Public Service in Illinois, including CPS Camp #115, Subunit #30.  CPS volunteers at this camp were "guinea pigs" for medical experiments studying the physiological effects of heat and tropical conditions.  Camp #115 was a cooperative agency administered the Mennonites, Brethren, and Friends under the direction of the Office of Scientific Research and Development.  Subunit #30 was administered by Mennonite Central Committee.

Materials in this collection include the diaries of two CPS volunteer participants in these experiments:  Duane Hougham (Methodist) and George Nachtigall (Mennonite Brethren).  Nachtigall's diary is a photocopy of the original.  Also included are letters with CPS volunteers stationed in Illinois, clippings, and a copy of Oyer's article.

Personal papers of an African American Mennonite minister who worked to combat racism in the (old) Mennonite Church and the Mennonite Church USA.  Powell served as executive secretary of the Minority Ministries Council from 1969 to 1974.  He left the church in 1974 vowing never to return.  After ministering in several other denominations, he decided to return to the Mennonite Church as the director of evangelism and church development in the Mennonite Board of Missions.

His personal papers primarily document his involvement with AFRAM (African Afro-Americas Inter-Mennonite Unity Conference), a "Mini-World Conference" that focused on "world-wide Black concerns."  Other materials in his papers include documents pertaining to his work as executive secretary of the Minority Ministries Council, his involvement in the Cross Cultural Youth Convention and the Soul and Spirit Interracial Couples Retreat.  Researchers will also find correspondence and essays by Powell.
