A small set of family papers consisting primarily of correspondence from Benjamin Byler Stoltzfus (a farmer in West Liberty, Ohio and preacher at the Lima Rescue Mission of the (old) Mennonite Church) and his children B. Frank Stoltzfus (documenting his studies at Goshen College and his Mennonite Central Committee service in Constantinople, Turkey in 1917), Will A. Stoltzfus (including letters from New York Biblical Seminary and Beiruit, Lebanon, where he engaged in education and mission work in 1920-1921), Lena Stoltzfus, and Eli Stoltzfus.  Also includes poetry written by his daughter Rosie Stoltzfus Byler.

Minutes, financial records, and correspondence of an organization created to aid and assist the migration, resettlement, and rehabilitation of Mennonites displaced after World War II. The organization administered funds to facilitate the migration of Russian, Dutch, and German Mennonites to Paraguay.  These records not only provide an in-depth look at the financial aspects of the miagration, but also contain migration statistics and insight to the practical problems faced by Mennonite refugees seeking to relocate. Post-1950 records document Mennonite resettlement in Uraguay and West Germany as well.

This set of collected family documents contains correspondence, financial records, broadsides, property records, tax receipts, sermons, and assorted ephemera pertaining to the Nold and Yoder families of Columbia, Ohio, later of Columbiana and Leetonia, Ohio.  Materials document the following individuals, all of whom held ministerial positions in area Mennonite congregations:

Bishop Jacob Nold (1765-1834)

Deacon Jacob Nold (1798-1864)

Deacon John Ziegler Nold (1823-1913)

Deacon John L. Yoder, son-in-law of John Ziegler Nold (1855 - 1940)

Bishop Paul L. Yoder (1897-1990)

The bulk of the correspondence comprises incoming correspondence to Jacob Nold (1898-1964) and Paul L. Yoder.

Of particular significance in this collection is the copy of a petition drafted by J. M. Brenneman to be sent to President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 that pleads for Mennonite exemption from military service in the American Civil War.

The collection was accepted with the expectation that more papers would be added later, but that didn't happen.

Allen B. Christophel Court Martial Proceedings and Biographical Information

Transcript of Christophel's court martial proceedings for his refusal to rake and sow grass seed at Camp Zachary Tayler, Ky.  Christophel, a Mennonite conscientious objector, refused to do this work because it "was of a military nature."  He was sentenced to ten years hard labor at Fort Leavenworth.

Also included in this small set of papers are a biographical sketch written by Russell Kraybill (1984) and a collection of memories of Christophel provided by his family, friends, and students.

Minutes, reports, correspondence, and questionnaires pertaining to the work of a committee charged with addressing lifestyle "problems" in the church, such as dress, divorce and remarriage, trade union membership, and the interpretation of "separation from the world."  The goal of the committee appears to have been the development of uniform standards of conduct across the (old) Mennonite Church in accordance with doctrine.
