A large light fixture hangs from the ceiling at right. A large column is visible to right of fixture, indicating the building is some institution or larger home of well to do people. Similar to photo published in Frank H. Epp's book: Mennonite Exodus, p.383.

The children are seated at tables, either waiting for their food or just finished it. A number of adults are also in the photo. Donated by Charlotte Regier? Her MCC term was 1947-1948.

A group of refugees just arrived in Halifax from Europe? Group includes 2 men, several boys, mostly women & a few children. In middle (striped coat) is Anne Janzen of the South-End MB Church. They stand in front of train cars in front of Pier 21 building. First in series from Frank H. Epp's refugee photos file (many from late 1940s) which continues to 2001-14.168.
Note on back: "A family in a cellar room in Heilbronn." Six family members are seated around a table at right while an older woman (the grandmother?) stands at the stove. Probably taken in the late 1940s just after the war. See related photo in 2001-14.143.
Note attached to photo: "These children at last for once (endlich einmal) have the chance to have enough to eat (satt essen) - the most wonderful, sweet oatmeal porridge, such a rarity! at home they never get this. These children know from their parents and teachers, that people in the USA are ready to help them and do much good for them." A young woman, a Red Cross worker & an older boy, smile as a boy eats his porridge. Many other children are seated at the tables as well. Taken in Germany?
