A funeral in the Forestry Camp near Yalta

This photograph shows a large group of men posed in front of some bare trees, alongside a light colored coffin on a stand, all without their caps on. A German note in the front reads: "? Plett, died in the South Coast Forestry Camp. The son of a Molotschna bishop. 1916. In the Crimean mountains outside of Yalta. The address of P.J. Sawatzky is noted on the reverse, R.R. #2, Ruthven, Ont. This photo also appears on page 146 of the book by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia.

This photograph shows a group of 16 young men serving in the Alternative Forestry Service in Russia. They are posed in their uniforms in front of one of the buildings. The two men reclining on the ground are wearing white aprons. The photograph is stamped on the reverse, possibly with the name of the Forstei or maybe the photographer? The name Edgar R., written in pencil, also appears on the back. This photograph is mounted on decorated matting 282 x 222 cm. OS

This large collage is titled on top in Russian with the date 1912. Besides the portraits of the service men serving on the forestry camp it also includes the Russian men who were in charge of this camp and an outdoor view of the camp. The names of the persons in Russian are:

This photograph shows a very large tree in a forest, with 3 unidentified young ladies perched on the branches and the trunk of the tree . This photograph also appears in the book by Lawrence Klipppenstein and Jacob Dick, Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia on page 63 which is the section on the Forestry Service. The caption reads "How did the ladies get up there?"

This portrait shows a slightly older man in winter clothing and a thin cane in his right hand, seated on wooden branches with wood chips? Scattered on his overcoat. There are some more tree branches leaning against the wall behind him. This photograph can also be found on page 150 of the book Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick.

This is a full-length portrait of an identified man in full uniform of the Alternative Service workers in Russia during World War I. He is holding on to an ornamental chair to his left and has a newspaper in his right hand. On the cloth backdrop behind him one sees some drapes, steps, a mirror and other furnishings. This photograph also appears in Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by Lawrence Klippenstein and Jacob Dick on page 118.

This photograph shows a train coming around the bend in the distance. Two men are standing alongside the railroad tracks. This picture was taken by the Mennonite medical service men who worked on the trains during World War I.
