An ad hoc committee (later named Welcome Committee) was formed during an informal meeting of parents and friends early in 1998. Its purpose is to: assist the Mennonite Church reflect on attitudes toward homosexuality; to encourage the church to consider entire statements passed at conventions at Saskatoon (1986) and Purdue (1987) and not to elevate them to a status above scripture; to promote resources to encourage further discernment; enable gay and lesbian voices to be heard; and to advocate on behalf of gay and lesbian Mennonites.
