History
Jacob J. Toews, evangelist, missionary, and Christian educator, was born on April 30, 1914 in the village of Alexanderthal, Molotschna Colony, South Russia. He was the third of six children born to Johann and Margarethe (nee Janz) Toews. He also had three older step-siblings from his fathers first marriage. Toews' received his early education from his father who was a minister, farmer and teacher. This was cut short by war and revolution which precipitated the family immigrating to Canada in 1926. His family settled in Coaldale, Albert where Toews finished his high school education and then went on to Bible school in Coaldale and Hepburn. He was converted in 1928 and baptized on August 14, 1932. On October 3, 1937 Toews married Lena Schulz. Their marriage produced three children. Over his years of service, Toews pastored in Dallas (Oregon), Shafter (California), Buhler (Kansas), Kitchener (Ontario), Winnipeg (Manitoba), and Neuwied (Deutschland). He taught Bible courses in Lustre (Montana), Fresno (California), Hepburn (Saskatchewan), Winnipeg (Manitoba), and Clearbrook (British Columbia). During this time he also continued his education, receiving a Master's Degree from the University of Toronto, a B.D. Degree from the Western Evangelical Lutheran Seminary, a Th.M. Degree from Winona Lake School of Theology and a Doctor of Theology Degree from Dallas Theological Seminary. In addition to teaching and pastoring, Toews was also very involved in the Mennonite Brethren Conference. For nine years he served as the Executive Secretary of Evangelism for the Canadian Mennonite Brethren Conference and then another five years as resource person and minister at large for the Mennonite Brethren Board of Missions and Services in Europe and South America. Jacob J. Toews died on March 6, 1995 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
