Mennonite Central Committee of BC
British Columbia Mennonites became active in their support of refugee relief during the 1930s. In 1940 the Provincial Mennonite Relief Committee, British Columbia (PMRC-BC) was formed. Abram A. Wiens was the director of this work from 1943-1963 having opened a clothing depot in a converted chicken barn on his property in 1944. In 1961 it became known as the Provincial Mennonite Relief and Immigration Committee (PMRIC).
In December, 1963 Mennonite Central Committee Canada was formed by representatives of various Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches. Its affiliate, Mennonite Central Committee British Columbia (MCCBC) was formed on October 24, 1964. MCC remains an active organization concerned with international development and emergency relief services in more than 50 countries world-wide, but also with local services to aboriginal people, abuse response and prevention, employment and community development, HIV/Aids education, peace education, refugee assistance and service worker placement.

Thrift Stores
Volunteers are the backbone of the MCC BC Thrift Stores where they sort, mend, price and display the great variety of mostly used goods that are donated. Their purpose is to provide material aid to people in Third World countries and to make some inexpensive used goods available locally through other charitable organizations. Donated items include all kinds of new and used clothing.
The first store in BC was opened in 1973 in Clearbrook with Mary Thiessen as the first manager. Since then nine stores have been established in places like Yarrow, Vancouver, Chilliwack, Kelowna, Kamloops and Langley. In 2008 gross sales amounted to close to $1 million. Those who benefit are donors who are able to donate unneeded items to needy people. Customers also benefit as do the volunteers who see this as a service to the Lord. The overseas recipients are also helped to meet some of their needs.
The Thrift Stores have been a vital link in the work of MCC and have provided a great deal of help to needy people
