from obituary in Prologue, spring 1970, p. 38-39 “Theodore R. Schellenberg, 66, a former Assistant Archivist of the United States, died January 14, 1970, at his home in Broad Run, Va. A native of Buhler, Kan., he studied at Tabor College, the University of Kansas, and the University of Pennsylvania where he received his Ph. D. in history in 1934. He authored The Management of Archives and Modern Archives, standard textbooks on archival administration. “A world-renowned authority on archival management, his works have been translated into German, Spanish, Portugese, and Hebrew. The Israeli government recently requested permission to include him in the “Who’s Who” of those who had contributed to the development of the nation. “As a Federal employee for almost thirty years, most of which time was with the National Archives, Mr. Schellenberg assisted many Government divisions and departments in their handling of public records. In addition to his Government service, Mr. Schellenberg also had a number of other appointments, including the following: Fulbright lecturer, Australia and New Zealand, 1954; Rockefeller grantee, Trinidad and Tobago, 1958; U. S. representative, Commission on History, Pan American Institute of Geography and History, Ecuador, 1959; American Specialist, International Educational Exchange Program, Department of State, South American countries, 1960; Director, First Inter-American Archival Seminar, Washington, D. C., 1961; Chairman, Inter-American Archives Council of National Archivists of Latin America, 1961; and Director, Institutes of Archival Management, American University, 1957 and 1958, and University of Texas, 1960. “Mr. Schellenberg was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Society of American Archivists, American Historical Association, and Southern Historical Association. His library has been given to Tabor College and his papers to the Kansas State Historical Society.”
