History

Johann G. Rempel: teacher, principal, minister and elder: was born on February 1, 1890 to Gerhard G. Rempel (1860-1919) and Maria Rempel (1864-1891) in Nieder-Chortitza, Chortitza colony, South Russia. After public school he attended the Pedagogical Course in Chortitza and became a teacher in various communities. During the Russian Revolution he served as chair of the village council in his home community. During the First World War he served on the medical trains as a conscientious objector (Sanitätsdienst).

On August 23, 1920 he married Susann Epp (1899-1988), daughter of Jacob D. Epp (1872-1919) and Susanna Sawatzky (1877-1914). In the same year he was ordained to the ministry. He carried on as teacher and minister for some years until the dual role became too heavy.

The family left Russia in January 1923 and arrived in Canada five months later. They settled in Langham, Saskatchewan where he served the local church for 12 years until he started teaching at the Bible School in Rosthern, Saskatchewan in 1935. He held this post for sixteen years. Rempel also served as secretary-treasurer for the Conference of Mennonites in Canada from 1930-1947. In 1946 he was ordained as elder.

J.G. Rempel was a prolific writer. His articles appeared in Der Bote from 1927-1959. He also wrote numerous books. Rempel died January 1, 1963.
