J.A. Rempel served in the church in Gruenfeld in 1924. He was an elder in the congregations of Neu Chortitza and Nikolaital churches. He was imprisoned and executed in 1941. An article in Der Bote June 8, 1983 p. 1-2 states he died on January 22, 1943 according to a Red Cross report. The 1943 date provided by the Red Cross was later to be found to be incorrect, see Hermann Heidebrecht "Auf dem Gipfel des Lebens : das Leben des Ältesten Jakob Rempel ; vom Stallknecht zum Professor, vom Träumer zum Märtyrer," p. 270.
