Biographical history

Elias (Eli) L. Frey (born 2 November 1856, died 20 March 1942), a leading Ohio Mennonite (Mennonite Church) bishop in the first half of the 19th century, was bishop of the Fulton County Amish Mennonite district under the Ohio and Eastern A.M. Conference 1908-1942, descended from an old Montbéliard (France) family, his father having immigrated from there in 1839, settling in Fulton County near Pettisville in 1844. He was baptized in 1880, ordained deacon in 1884. He married Anna Short, was the father of eleven children, one of whom, Philemon, became a minister in his father's congregation. He was an able speaker and administrator, a rare combination of conservative and progressive attitudes, served as moderator of the Eastern Amish Mennonite Conference several times and as moderator of the Mennonite General Conference 1917-1919, was a member of the Peace Problems Committee 1919-1937 and its chairman 1925-1935, and a member and officer of the Mennonite Relief Commission.
