Scope and content

This pipe is believed to be a gift to John Hugo Lais (5-17-1849 to 2-1-1894) who fought in Kaiser Wilhelm's war, probably about 1870 because he immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1872. He worked in the coal mines in Pennsylvania in 1874, later living in Indiana on an Amish farm where he met and married Susannah Plank in 1879. He moved to Oregon along with the Jonas Kauffman and Isaac Miller families in 1880, was converted, became a Mennonite and was a charter member of Zion Mennonite Church in June of 1893 and father to Daniel J. Lais.
