History
Victor Peters was born in Russia on July 7, 1915, to Johann and Maria Peters. His father and grandfather were shot to death on November 5, 1919, by Machno bandits when he was four years old, forcing him and his mother to flee to the Choritza colony until 1928. In May of 1928, he arrived with his mother and younger brother in Winnipeg. He married Elizabeth Dyck (1915-2011) on June 27, 1942. He worked at various farms in Manitoba, and this allowed him to attend school in the winter, eventually enrolling in training to become a teacher. He taught in various schools in across Manitoba, including a short stint that the University of Manitoba, before moving on to teach history at the Minnesota State University in Moorhead. Victor became a well-knowing historian and writer and wrote a book on Hutterites and one on Nestor Machno, a Russian revolutionary and anarchist, whose group was responsible for the deaths of many Mennonites in Ukraine. Peters died on September 9, 1998, on the way to Stratford Ontario for the Shakespeare play festival.
