A leprosy patient tries on a sweater with Dr. John Schmidt, Paraguay

Dr. John Schmidt holds an undershirt as one of his leprosy patients tries on a sweater from a Christmas package. Another man stands to the left, and in the background, two women look on from behind the gate of a rough wood and wire fence. Handwritten: “Ein Leprakranker bekommt ein paket – Mai 1955” [roughly: “A leper gets a parcel – May 1955”] Handwritten: “One of our patients trying on the sweater he received in his gift package. Dr. Schmidt is holding warm undershirt from same package.” Note: printed label appears to misread German “Mai 1955” as “Mar. 1955” and therefore gives wrong month.
