1) An old letter dated 11 April 1805 transcribed from the Archive of the Danzig Mennonite Church and published in Der Bote, 5 Jan. 1938. Written by Jakob Wiens to Johan Kauenhowen. The letter references Klaas E. Reimer, founder of the Mennonite Kleine Gemeinde.

Kuruschan Old Folks home

This photo is another view of the Old Folks home. "Kuruschan". The residents of this home who were poor, were supported by their home villages. The last "house father", Rev F Willms, from Tiegenhagen, was arrested during one night in 1925 and was shot together with four other Mennonite men. The limbs of the five persons were later found in a gravel pit between Halbstadt and Petershagen. [HR 122] (2 prints)

"Volksdeutsche Reiterschwadron an der Molotschna; da vor volksdeutsche Civilisten aus den umliegenden Dörfern. 31.X.1942. Nach Angaben von H. Rossner wurder d. Reiterschwadron für den Selbstschutz durch einheimische Volksdeutsche aufgesetellt und durfte von der Wehrmacht nicht an die Front geschickt werden um des Gebiet nicht von Männern zu entblössen. Nach dem Himmler besuch kamen die Reiter organisatorisch zur 8. SS-Kavllerie-Division. Bei der Evakuierung per Treck 1943/44 ritten sie als Bedeckung mit."

Rossner, the cavalry squadron was formed by the local ethnic Germans for self-defense and was not allowed to be sent to the front by the Wehrmacht in order not to denude the area of men. Ministers' course in Molotschna

This is a photo of a ministers course in the Molotschna in winter 1925/26. Participants were from the various Mennonite settlements. People were willing to spend time and money for this purpose. In charge are Isaak Regehr, teacher and minister of the Mennonite Brethren church and H.J. Enns. Among the participants is Jakob Pankratz, Sagradowka, sitting second from the right. [HR 213]

Old Folks home, "Kuruschan"

This is a photo of the Old Folks Home, "Kuruschan." It was built to commemorate the founding of the Molotschna settlement and had room for fifty guests. It was financed and maintained by the Halbstadt municipality. [HR 114]. The man in the front of the home is the administrator Franz Willms.
